U.S. Economic Forecast for Second Half of 2016
William A. Strauss, CBE Senior Economist and Economic Advisor | Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago

We are in the seventh year of the economic expansion following the "Great Recession" of 2008 and 2009. During the economic downturn the economy experienced outsized losses in the housing, manufacturing and jobs. Yet, what would typically be a robust recovery has not occurred. Labor markets while significantly improved are still not at a normal level and wage growth remains low. Credit conditions continue to ease from what existed during the recession, but remain restrained for many borrowers and continues acting as a headwind to growth. The collapse in energy prices has added some boost to the U.S. economy, although due to greater domestic energy production, not as much as in the past. However, the surging value of the dollar has lowered growth as net exports deteriorate. Inflation has been low and well below the Federal Reserve's target for several years, yet the Fed has begun to remove its very accommodative policy. Mr. Strauss will look at the performance of the overall macro economy with specific attention paid to key economic sectors and indicators for the U.S. economy over the next couple of years.

Selling More Made in USA: How to Get Onboard
Harry Moser, President | Reshoring Initiative

The increasing advantages of producing in America for the N. American market are driving retailers and manufacturers to reshore. Walmart has committed to buying an incremental $250 billion of Made in USA products over 10 years ending 2023. The not-for-profit Reshoring Initiative recently launched its online Resources for Retail Suppliers, providing 35 individual contacts to help suppliers decide what products to reshore, how to achieve competitive costs and which retailers are interested. So far, Walmart is the only retailer listed as interested. We hope to find more. Approximately 240,000 manufacturing jobs have been reshored or FDI'd by about 800 OEMs and thousands of their suppliers since the manufacturing employment low of January, 2010. Most of the reshoring is in consumer goods. Learn how and why to use the free Initiative tools:

  • TCO Estimator for sourcing decisions and selling vs. offshore competitors
  • Case Studies for free publicity about your reshoring successes.
  • Library for seeking customers and competitors that are reshoring.
  • Summary of surveys on consumer preferences for Made in USA
  • Resources for Retail Suppliers
