What to Expect in 2013

RVCF LogoWe're looking forward to 2013! The RVCF crew has been hard at work developing the programs that will be offered this year. For suppliers, there will be programs focusing on business process improvement; automation and workflow of purchase order changes and management; reducing freight claims and better managing "on-time performance;" development of retail scorecards, the metrics and how to communicate with your retail customer; and RFID utilization and ROI while meeting your retail customers' requirements. Additionally, we'd like to establish groups, by product lines, which would work with retail customers to address unique issues that pertain to their product flow and speed to market.

Innovations in Omni Channel Retailing

"Dropping the walls" is an imperative that should be the goal at the top of each retailer's "to do" list for 2013. Your customers are increasingly sophisticated, empowered by mobile technologies that deliver innovative shopping experiences and product research at their fingertips. In a world where the store walls no longer exist, you as a retailer are challenged as your customers are no longer defining you as a store or website, but as a brand. Several technologies are emerging that will continue to drive innovations in your customer's shopping experience.

Vendor Compliance: From a 3PL Perspective

Retailer chargeback fines for non-compliant shipments are a profit-draining reality for many consumer goods manufacturers - but they don't have to be.

Some vendors spend more time, energy and money attempting to negotiate their way out of whatever chargebacks they were assessed rather than simply spending a small fraction of their time and money on the front side preventing these problems from happening in the first place. Success requires creating a vendor compliance capability - either internally or through a partnership with a third party logistics provider (3PL) experienced in retail distribution.

We continue our series of 7 Steps to Reduce Chargebacks in Your Vendor Compliance Program.

Things Are Changing, But We Can Learn From History...

Our deeply rooted global trade industry has been enabled by an ocean transportation industry that is almost as old as the earliest patterns of trade that we know existed. The very dynamic ocean transportation industry has seen vast changes over the centuries that have been engaged in global trade. In today's world, this network of tremendous-sized ocean going vessels, even with slow steaming, are speeding across the same trade lanes as their early ancestors did under sail.

Vendor Compliance Data as a Strategic Asset
(Part II)

Last month's article talked about how vendor compliance data can be leveraged and used as a strategic asset - helping to drive collaboration between retailers and vendors so that they can jointly focus on minimizing lost sales. By using robust analytics to focus compliance conversations on the impact to sales, rather than on penalties and costs, retailers and vendors will align on something that really matters. It's a win for everyone - retailers, vendors and the customer.

New "IRANNOTICE" Notice Requirement Slated to Become Effective on February 6th

Last summer, President Obama signed the Iran Threat Reduction and Syria Human Rights Act of 2012 (the "Act") into law, ever tightening the current U.S. sanctions against Iran for its continued nuclear proliferation activities and support of international terrorism. The Act expanded U.S. sanctions by requiring publicly traded companies and foreign private issuers to, among other things, disclose and report certain of their activities involving Iran to the Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC"). Most SEC-registered companies already report activities involving Iran and other sanctioned countries to the SEC; however, the new disclosure requirement provided for in Section 219 of the Act captures within its scope additional activities that were not previously reportable, such as dealings with certain Specially Designated Nationals ("SDNs"). The new disclosure and reporting requirement went into effect on February 6, 2013.

Planning Inventory a Critical Component of Value Chain Management?

Is inventory management driving you crazy? Do you have too much inventory on the wrong products and yet you are still out of stock on the critical ones? Yes, inventory management issues, such as these, have been around for years - so how do you finally resolve them? One of the strongest ways is through solid inventory planning, sales forecasting and replenishment approaches that begin the journey. Value is essentially consumer service, consumer satisfaction, in stock, price/value impression, shopping experience, revenue and net profit generation. Outside of labor expense, one of the highest expenses for a retailer is usually inventory.
