RVCF's "ICE" Conference: Innovation, Collaboration and Execution

RVCF LogoRVCF's Annual Fall Conference agenda is close to completion, just waiting for a few last minute retailers to sign up for breakouts with their suppliers. If you're part of merchandise procurement with a retailer or responsible for order management for a merchandise wholesaler or manufacturer, then you need to attend the RVCF Fall Conference. Unlike any other retail conference, RVCF brings true retailer-supplier collaboration to the table - in fact, we sit retailers down with individual suppliers 700+ times throughout the event. Call it "speed dating," call it anything you want, but what we desire to have our attendees accomplish at these meetings is priceless!

Vendor Compliance: From a 3PL Perspective

Whether you are currently utilizing the services of a 3PL or considering using the services of a 3PL in the future, you must seek to understand and define what the policy is of the 3PL in the event a chargeback does occur as a result of a clear service failure.

We recently led a discussion group at a 3PL summit where this topic was discussed amongst 25 3PL's and heard a variety of answers on this topic from our colleagues in the 3PL industry and can categorize the policies into five primary categories.

Doing More at the Source to Keep Up with the Retail Revolution

Today's retail supply chain is caught in a vice grip between cost crunching and consumer demand. Improving speed and lowering costs without sacrificing quality or customer service is a challenge. Doing more at the source is a strategy that can help retailers become more agile and adaptable to consumer demand, while reducing costs in the supply chain.

The price for implementing change in the production lifecycle is at its lowest when done at the factory level. By deploying change at source, the impact on cost and agility is maximized. Initiatives that remove time and cost from the cycle - such as customization of goods, generation of store-ready merchandise, providing flexible pack strategies, preparing shipments for direct ship or crossdock - can all be done at the factory level; doing so makes the supply chain more agile and transparent. Finding ways to do more at the source and capturing actionable inventory intelligence is a major priority for injecting responsiveness into the omni-channel retail supply chain.

OFAC Now Permits Exports of Personal Communication Software, Hardware and Services to Iran

On May 30, 2013, the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control ("OFAC") published General License D as part of the Iranian Transactions and Sanctions Regulations ("ITSR") authorizing U.S. companies to export or reexport certain personal communications items and services to Iran. Generally, the ITSR broadly prohibits most trade activities by U.S. persons with Iran without OFAC's prior authorization; however, the rollout of new General License D, which is essentially a license exception, illustrates the United States' continued desire to promote freedom of expression in Iran.

How Technological Advances Have Increased Supply Chain Visibility

We have seen incredible changes in our respective businesses within the last few years and most of these changes have been associated with our collective efforts to lower our direct and in-direct costs, drive our organizations to increase global supply chain efficiency, find new lower cost sourcing areas, and take days out of the complex global supply chain. These efforts are all in support of our desire to have quality merchandise produced at great price points to be placed in the right quantity in the correct size, color, and style when our customer wants to make a purchase either at a store or from a website.

Why Planning and Sales Forecasting are Bad for Replenishment

How often does key management review a forecast accuracy report? The irony is the same people that don't review the forecast accuracy report are the first to talk about out-of-stocks, overstocks, and open to buy issues. The same people will have this "I can't believe this has happened" look; arm waving, yelling, finger-pointing, and similar activities will often occur in meetings (yes, I've worked in retail). Your forecast is the critical element to retail success. Forecasting is used to plan, budget, and replenish. Replenishment includes lead-time days and order cycle days or weeks of supply that with a forecast convert from days to a number of units needed in the supply chain. The big question is this: Why is forecasting accuracy left off of many KPI screens, but the results of poor forecasting are front and center in your company as the hot, must-fix agenda.
