From the Desk of Kim Zablocky:
"What is RVCF Good At?"

RVCF LogoRVCF Supplier membership - what does it mean? I was just asked this morning, "What is RVCF good at?" I answered, "Getting retailers and their merchandise suppliers to communicate and collaborate."

Retailing in the U.S. is now nearing $4 trillion in annual sales - that's a whole lot of money! Let's assume, for instance, that the wholesale cost of goods that supports that $4 trillion number is $2.3 trillion. Imagine then that of the $2.3 trillion in goods shipped to retailers, as much as 3% of those goods were in error. Understanding the magnitude of this explains the vision and mission of RVCF. Think of the costs on both sides of the retail trading partner aisle that are attributed to wrong product, color, size, etc. Let's not forget transportation issues; early/late shipments; Customs delays; product delays; missed lead times; and, of course, shortages, both concealed and full carton, while in transit from supplier to shelf. Add product safety, sourcing, CPSIA, product testing, insurance, C-TPAT, and DC bypass delivery to the mix of an already complex supply chain and it's easy to see why we exist.

Complete and On-Time: The Key to Mitigating Retail Margin Risk and Ensuring Brand Protection

In my previous article dated May 9th, we discussed the concept of retail margin risk and the 5 critical steps supply chain professionals could take to mitigate it. Retail margin risk, by definition, is the potential permanent loss of margin due to internal and external performance related events. A major contributing factor to lost margin opportunities is the persistent out-of-stocks (OOS) that plague the retail industry. As part of an ongoing series, we will examine each of the 5 steps retailers can take to mitigate risks beginning with one of the most crucial, complete and on-time delivery.

Customs and Border Protection to Begin Full Enforcement of the Importer Security Filing Requirements on July 9th

After several years of a so-called "measured and common sense" approach to the enforcement of the Importer Security Filing requirements (i.e., otherwise known as "10+2" or "ISF"), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will begin enforcing the rule on July 9, 2013. This means that, beginning on July 9th, CBP may begin assessing liquidated damages for failures to file ISFs, late filings, and inaccurate filings and updates. CBP may also withhold the release or transfer of cargo, issue no load instructions and, in some cases, impose penalties for serious or repetitive violations.

Yusen, We Have a Problem!: 10 + 2 - $5,000

The news this week revolves around the announcement from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that full enforcement of Importer Security Filings (ISF) will go into effect on July 9th.
In order to meet the Security and Accountability (SAFE) Port Act of 2006, CBP began requiring importers and carriers to submit information 24 hours before lading of a vessel in order to prevent smuggling and ensure cargo safety.

The 5 Most Expensive Mistakes When Managing Inventory

There are five mistakes in managing inventory that cost companies millions in lost profits and higher operation costs each year. All five mistakes are based on the forecasting system you use and the processes using the forecast results. Accurate demand forecasting and efficient processes allow you to deliver higher customer service levels, which result in greater sales at reduced operating costs. When demand is forecasted accurately, sales are met in a profitable process that keeps supplier, retailer, and consumer connected and satisfied. Accurate demand forecasting increases customer satisfaction and reduces lost sales. The results reduce the loss of customers to the competition and reduce markdowns thereby improving profitability.
