From the Desk of Kim Zablocky:
2014 Initiative - RTV's

RVCF LogoOne of RVCF's 2014 initiative will be a deep dive into best practices for Returns to Vendor (RTV's) where step by step business processes will be developed to offer both retailers and their merchandise suppliers the ability to return merchandise in an efficient, economical way that is, more importantly, easy to reconcile financially.

Metrics that Matter

At RVCF we believe that building and using a better retail scorecard requires a complete understanding of which metrics matter the most and how these metrics influence corporate performance. To help our retail members fully understand these metrics and their relationships to bottom line results, RVCF has partnered with Supply Chain Insights to help us research and present industry best thinking on this subject. Starting with a survey in January we will analyze the relationships between scorecard metrics and corporate performance and deliver at our May 2014 Conference important new insights around the "Metrics that Matter."

China: The World's Factory - Still Focused on Growth!
Ronald M. Marotta, Yusen Logistics (Americas) Inc.

The U.S. was China's second-largest trade partner and the country's top export market last year. Bilateral trade is up 8.5% year-on-year to the U.S.'s $484 billion, accounting for 12.5% of China's overall trade. In 2012, the GDP growth in the Western region was much faster than in the Eastern and Central parts of China and even 2.16% more than the national average. In 2012, the Western region's GDP accounted for 19.75% of China's total, up 0.38% from a year earlier.

Going Back to the Source to Better Serve Customers
Bryan Nella, GT Nexus

At the RVCF Annual Fall Conference this month, Linda Sarentino from PVH and Kurt Cavano from GT Nexus delivered a discussion on going back to the source as a strategy to better serve customers. The topic should be top of mind for retailers and brands today for several reasons, but there's one stand-alone challenge that makes it worthwhile to plan a strategy around doing more at the source - omni-channel. The omni-channel challenge remains an unsolved puzzle. Much investment and emphasis has been put forth on the front of store, but the supply chain is not up to the task.

Recap: Conference Giveaways and Social Happenings

California's AB 227 Shields Businesses from Many Proposition 65 Lawsuits
Melissa Miller Proctor, Esq., Sandler, Travis and Rosenberg, P.A.

On October 5, 2013, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law new legislation that should eliminate many frivolous Proposition 65 lawsuits. Under AB 227, California companies now have fourteen days to cure certain Proposition 65 violations before private lawsuits can be commenced against them. California's Proposition 65, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Title 27 CCR 25000 - 27001), was enacted in November 1986, and was intended to protect California citizens and the State's drinking water sources from chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm, and to inform citizens about exposures to such chemicals.

Vendor Compliance from a 3PL Perspective:
An Overview of Key EDI Transactions

Scott Weiss, Taylored Service

In today's automated distribution environment of RF based scanning, facility automation, and real time information, seemingly every client expects their third party logistics provider (3PL) to maintain accurate inventory to pick product in a timely manner. More and more, technology has played a critical role in the manufacturer/3PL/retailer relationship - so much so that one can argue that a 3PL is really a technology company disguised as a logistics provider.

Is the Store Obsolete or Is It the New Omni-Channel Hub
Dwight D. Hill, The Retail Advisory LLC

The store is dead! E-commerce will render stores obsolete!

We've all seen these headlines in the media, and I am a firm believer that the retail store as it currently exists today, is dying and will cease to exist in the next 10 years. A retailer with stores that operate in isolation of the digital side of commerce will be irrelevant to the consumer - period. Why? Because e-commerce is driving fundamental changes in your customer's shopping behavior and, as a result, is driving fundamental changes in how you as a retailer must learn to operate your stores. The key word here is CHANGE.

The Supply Chain Control Tower
Martin O'Grady, Outsource Management Services Limited

The Control Tower Concept
The reference to control towers often puts one in mind of aviation, as would a mention of the bridge bringing forth thoughts of the nautical worlds.

It is becoming more common nowadays to hear of Supply Chains having Control Towers, an evolution from Central Planning which, in its origins, was about delivery completeness, trailer counts, locations and so on. For warehouses it was similar and included orders dispatched, nil stocks, absence and the like.
