Every supplier in the retail industry is striving to achieve the perfect order - an order that's complete, on time, accurately documented, and damage-free. Of course, these efforts are typically hampered by limited in-house personnel and tight budgets.

As a result, errors are painfully common and suppliers are hit with chargebacks and fees totaling $6 billion to $8 billion annually across the retail industry. On average, compliance deductions are 0.3 to 1.5 percent of gross invoice. With the advent of retail receiving audit software, these numbers are expected to increase substantially. It doesn't take a math wizard to realize how much these charges are hurting the bottom lines of suppliers.

The Beauty of Anomaly/The Power of Why
Kirk White, Yusen Logistics (Americas) Inc.

Think of a famous cliché - a universal preconceived notion. An innocuous example might be "people who drive red cars get more speeding tickets than other drivers."

Now ask why this is a universal notion. Was there a study? Did a report go out in a scholarly journal that tracked speeding tickets and car color? Does snopes.com confirm this? (They don't.) Then why is this common belief? Could it be that the only time one thinks of this cliché is when a red car goes whizzing by doing ninety mph when everyone else is doing sixty-five or a red car is seen on the side of the road in front of a set of flashing blue and red lights?

This is the power of anomaly at work. People notice that which is incongruous to the norm.

E-Commerce is Killing Retailers - Here's How Your Supply Chain Can Save You
Suhas Sreedhar, GT Nexus

This year's holiday shopping season is shaping up to be a brutal bellwether for the runaway erosion of the traditional retail market. Shoppers spent 6.4% less on average1 this Thanksgiving weekend than in 2013. That's despite the economy and unemployment doing much better overall.2 The reason for the downturn in spending is a complex cocktail3 of demographics, changed buying habits, and cultural shifts.

Vendor Compliance from a 3PL Perspective: Bridging the Gap - The Role of 3PLs in the Journey to "Shopping Redefined"
Scott Weiss, Port Logistics Group

Everyone recognizes that the retail industry is in the midst of a phenomenal transition driven by always-on digital consumers who are molding the shopping experience to fit their lifestyles. Scorecarding: Our 2014 Survey Results Are Now Available for Download
RVCF

The value of a retailer scorecarding capability is significant - measuring supplier compliance and performance identifies where business opportunities exist and where effort can yield value. RVCF views scorecarding as a foundational business capability and the use of scorecards as integral to the relationship management and partner collaboration process. Always trying to identify additional value that business partners can derive from their scorecarding capability, we set out earlier this year to research current best practices within and between those trading partners that use scorecards. We sponsored Lora Cecere and her team at Supply Chain Insights LLC to conduct a thorough scorecarding survey and to capture responses from both the perspective of the retailer and the supplier. We asked quite a few questions and, as suspected, came away with a surprising amount of new insights, the largest of which is that today's scorecarding perspective has substantial room for expansion that could generate additional business understanding and contribution to both trading partners.

What's Happening to Black Friday?
Dwight D. Hill, McMillan Doolittle LLP

The air is crisp, the holiday sales prediction from the National Retail Federation is out, and retailer's shelves are stocked high with merchandise and gifts, ready for the masses - and another Black Friday is behind us.

This year's results were anything but stellar. Depending on your news source, sales over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend sank 11% according to the NRF and The Wall Street Journal.1 We shopped at Best Buy on Thanksgiving evening - bravely believing we would be putting our lives at risk with the thought of hordes rushing the store. As it turns out, we arrived to the store 30 minutes after opening to a relatively calm crowd - and even calmly picked up a door buster TV without any altercation or threat of being "tazed" by frantic shoppers. Not too many years ago we would have been trampled!

So what happened? We believe we are witnessing a transformation in the business of holiday.

New IT for Shared Warehousing Unlocks Value in Commercial Warehouse Leasing and Storage
Karl Siebrecht, FLEXE

Retailers, have you ever asked a supplier to hold some excess inventory for you until you had capacity to absorb it in your own warehouse or DC? Suppliers, have you ever asked your retail customers to take delivery earlier than they'd initially requested in order to help manage your pre-peak season buildup? This happens all the time, and is a common example of collaboration among good trading partners in a healthy supply chain. At its essence, this is an example of "sharing" warehouse capacity across organizations.

Canada Proposes Law to Investigate Alleged Price Gouging
RVCF

Canadian consumers have long complained that they've been paying higher prices than Americans on many products. Canadian retailers claim to be suffering because of alleged "geographic price discrimination" or "price gouging." As a result, a new bill has been introduced in Canada that would give the country's Competition Bureau the power to force U.S. retailers to explain why prices are higher in Canada than in the U.S..
