A Retailer's Perspective on Omni-channel Trends
Steven Lahr, RVCF Advisors

Retailers face some of the biggest challenges and stiffest competition doing business in today's omni-channel environment. Inventory integrity - having the right product in the right place at the right time - is paramount in competing for and maintaining customer loyalty. Suppliers still struggle with the concept of a "perfect order" as well as what constitutes a shortage and how to improve inventory integrity.

The Gold Standard of Standardization
Kirk White, Yusen Logistics (Americas) Inc.

There's a mindset today regarding the term "standardization." Many people, upon hearing it, are instantly struck with the image of dystopian robots all in a line, tethered to a conveyor belt as various tiny pieces of widgets roll past. Each assembles in a rote, rigid, identical manner until one comes across a piece that doesn't quite fit. At this moment, a buzzer goes off and the floor opens up, dropping said robot into the trash pit, the floor closes and another identical machine drops into its place. The conveyor starts again and everything continues...

The Five Crucial Steps of Merchandise Planning
Dwight D. Hill, McMillan Doolittle LLP

It's every retail executive's dreaded scenario. Your marketing or promotion has worked. You have drawn in your target customer either to your store or e-commerce channel with the right item, at hopefully the right price, and they are ready to buy. Sounds great, right? You're about to make a sale as soon as the customer clicks to add the item to their cart or physically select the item in the store. But the story unravels when the dreaded "out of stock" message appears or the customer is greeted by an empty shelf in the store.

Exceeding Expectations: How to Adapt to the Demands of the Omni-channel Experience
Jeff Rauscher, Redwood Software

On Black Friday, Best Buy experienced a website crash that left shoppers unable to make online and mobile purchases during an hour of one of the busiest shopping days of the year. The glitch was caused by a rapid influx of mobile traffic to the Best Buy site - something that many companies still struggle to handle. While the company managed to recover from the glitch that had their site "unavailable" for online shoppers, this incident highlights new challenges for all retailers in the new omni-channel market. According to PwC, now, more than two-thirds of shoppers are considered to be "omni-channel" consumers - buying in-store, online and using a variety of mobile devices.1 This statistic shows that retailers simply can't afford IT glitches like this.

Retail Industry Encouraged by Holiday Sales Gains
RVCF

In some ways, the deck seemed to be stacked against the retail industry as a late Thanksgiving holiday created a shorter shopping window between the long holiday weekend and Christmas, and Black Friday sales led many prognosticators to negatively adjust forecasts. Clearly, these predictions of doom and gloom were premature.
