What Does RVCF Do For You?

RVCF LogoThough many wholesalers and manufacturers of general merchandise and apparel are not members of RVCF, they still need to know that RVCF is working diligently to improve communications between retailer and their merchandise suppliers. In many cases, retail change requirements can be daunting; here's a short list of issues over the last few years: black hangers, secure over hanger (SOH) sizers, transportation management systems (TMS), inventory accuracy measures, RFID, and product images and attributes. RVCF offers a neutral place for both retailers and suppliers to discuss requirements, new initiatives, and strategies for next steps, no matter what comes down the pipeline.

Survey: How Suppliers Are Handling Value-Added Services

The topic of value-added services (VAS) continues to be an area of interest for merchandise suppliers. Suppliers are concerned with the costs associated with providing VAS to retailers and the time and labor required to meet these requirements as well as the possible consequences of not providing VAS.

Visualization Part One: What's Going On?
Kirk White, Yusen Logistics (Americas) Inc.

Imagine a radio contest...caller number three...free tickets to the Super Bowl. You win! A limo picks you up and drives you to the airport where you fly first class and check into a five-star hotel. You decide to take a short nap before the game - but you oversleep. You rush out of the hotel to your limo and frantically yell at the poor driver to "step on it!" He tries, but traffic is so bad that you miss the kick-off. As you jump out of the car and hurriedly scramble through the security checkpoints you realize that you are so late you don't even know what quarter it is. As you settle into your seat, the crowd erupts with a joyous roar! Something great has just happened and you missed it. You don't know the score, the down or even which team has possession of the ball. You are lost in a vast sea of confusion and over-priced beer.

3 Big Things NRF's Big Show Mostly Left Out
Suhas Sreedhar, GT Nexus

This year, National Retail Federation's (NRF) Big Show touched on a lot of big themes: omni-channel strategy, using big data analytics to understand shoppers, the volatile habits of millennials, and others. But there were topics, equally big, that didn't get much mention. Here are three that you should care about.

Vendor Compliance from a 3PL Perspective: Bridging the Gap - The Role of 3PL's in the Journey to "Shopping Redefined" (Part 2)

Our last article discussed how the world has changed. Today, we have three separate channels of shopping - retail, wholesale, and e-commerce - and having a 3PL retail specialist can provide advantages in terms of making sure each order is fulfilled as efficiently and timely as possible, regardless of what channel the order has come from.

RadioShack and the Issue of Relevance
Dwight D. Hill, McMillan Doolittle LLP

The news of RadioShack's Chapter 11 filing last week should have been a surprise to no one and all the pundits are pontificating what happened. Most of us have seen this coming, yet another casualty along the retail landscape. I, like a legion of other consultants, worked for RadioShack as a consultant several years ago. It was an initiative focused on operational effectiveness and cost reduction throughout the supply chain. Meanwhile, the CEO of the time was focused on plans for relocation of the corporate headquarters and the design/build of a sprawling campus.

Big Changes Proposed by California to Proposition 65's Warning Requirements
Melissa Jones, Stoel Rives, LLP

Nearly a year after it issued a pre-regulatory proposal concerning changes to the warning requirements for Proposition 65 (Prop 65), California's Office of Environmental Health and Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking. Proposition 65, also known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a broad law that requires companies to warn California consumers if their products contain a chemical "known to the state of California" to cause cancer or reproductive harm. The list of such chemicals is substantial and includes chemicals such as lead, cadmium, phthalates, among many others. OEHHA has stated that it is proposing changes to the warning regulations to address concerns that the current safe harbor Prop 65 warnings lack enough specificity to ensure that the public receives useful information about potential exposures.

Omni-channel Retailing for Suppliers: Setting Yourself Up for Success
Carol Weidner, eZCom Software

The omni-channel ideal is quickly becoming the dominant retail paradigm. As retailers strive to seamlessly and efficiently meet the needs of customers at every stage and every touchpoint in the retail process, their supplier partners must support them in order to remain competitive. This requires pronounced streamlining in all aspects of order management; increased EDI speed and compliance; highly efficient and transparent inventory management; and the ability to flexibly, quickly and compliantly meet all fulfillment requests - whether direct-to-consumer or shipped to a retailer's DC. Additionally, suppliers must find ways to meet these rising requirements in a cost-effective way.

Dimensional Weight Pricing Will Impact LTL Shipping Rates in 2015
RVCF

Effective January 1, 2015, carriers are changing the way domestic less-than-truckoad (LTL) freight bills are calculated. UPS and FedEx, which own more than 90 percent of the domestic small package market, are now applying dimensional weight pricing to all North American ground shipments. With dimensional weight pricing, shipping costs are based on either the weight or size of the package, whichever is highest.
