From the Desk of Kim Zablocky ... Key Steps Towards the Perfect Order
I heard a story the other day that had me shaking my head. Talking with a prospective supplier member, this person asked if we monitored a particular retailer on the Compliance Clearinghouse, I responded “No”, but would be more than happy to add this retailer and asked for a URL of the retailer’s vendor portal, and a contact name etc. The prospective member said she had no idea and that sales monitored the retailer’s portal.
From this comment, I’m going to toss out a few questions here directed at manufacturers; Who monitors your retail customer’s vendor and routing guides? Who monitors your retail customer’s Retailer-Supply Chain Scorecards (Does leadership know how you’re performing)? Who in your organization is responsible for conducting a cross functional order management team meetings? Who monitors deductions charged for non-compliance? Finally, who communicates to leadership regarding all of the above?

We know doing business with major retailers can be challenging, keep in mind, the 4 KPI’s in maintaining a good relationship is filling your orders; 1. On Time, 2. In Full, 3. Documentation Error Free, 4. Product Damaged Free. If Sales are the only ones communicating your order fulfillment performance to leadership, this can’t be a good thing. Here is a suggestion, when meeting with your retail customer, these competencies should be involved; sales, finance, DC manager, vendor compliance, and IT/EDI. Meet a minimum of once a year, and most importantly, get to know your counterpart.

On a final note RVCF will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year. This organization was created for you the manufacturer/wholesaler to give you a place to share best practices with your peer group, and meet with your retail customers all in one place to work through disconnects and miss communications that leads to profit loss caused by compliance deductions.
