From the Desk of Kim Zablocky:
Supplier Execs Go Off the Record about the State of Collaboration

RVCF LogoWhat is said off the record is usually more interesting, honest and even helpful than what is said on the record. That applies to politicians, business leaders, athletes and movie stars. It also applies to retail trading partners.

The State of Retailer-Supplier Collaboration: The Supplier's Perspective – 2015

The State of the Retailer-Supplier Collaboration: The Supplier's Perspective

RVCF commissioned an outside party to conduct anonymous, off-the-record interviews with five senior executives from merchandise supplier organizations. We wanted to hear uncensored yet constructive insights on the true state of collaboration from the supplier's perspective. We asked these industry professionals to lay their cards on the table, share their challenges, and offer suggestions for improving collaboration. This white paper provides the details of these conversations, using random names to protect the interviewee's anonymity.

How RVCF Open Forum Boards Spur Collaboration

RVCF has retailer-only and supplier-only open forums. Third party logistics providers who are essentially working in a supplier capacity can also participate in open forums if approved by RVCF. These forums give trading partners the opportunity to pick each other's brains and have in-depth discussions with their peers.

Yusen, We Have a Problem: The Towel: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Ask Why - a Slight Diversion on Root Cause
Kirk White, Yusen Logistics (Americas) Inc.

There's a story. As of this writing, it is unknown to the author as to whether it is factual or anecdotal, but it's a great story and illustrates a great point so here it is...

A famous and fancy hotel chain, let's call it XYZ Inn, was having a problem. Customers were unhappy. The guest comment cards were coming back with alarming negative reviews. Bookings were down. Repeat business was evaporating. All this on Alan Smithee's* first day as manager. Left with a lobby full of unhappy customers and a pile of angry comments, Alan knew he'd have to act on this situation or risk losing the hotel even more money. What to do... what to do.

Scott Weiss, Port Logistics Group

On Call Scheduling: The Beginning of the End?
Dwight D. Hill, McMillan Doolittle LLP

Abercrombie announced last week they would put an end to a labor scheduling practice called "on call" scheduling, where associates must be ready for shifts that can be canceled at the last minute. The retailer had been part of a group of retailers called out by the office of New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Attorney General's contention is that on call scheduling possibly breaks a New York law that retail associates must be paid at least 4 hours at minimum wage, even if they are sent home.1

Proposition 65 Update and News
Melissa Jones, Stoel Rives, LLP

Although it has been a relatively quiet summer for Proposition 65 news (other than the typical litigation that occurs on a regular basis), there have been several key developments over the past few months of which companies should be aware.

Integrated EDI: When Built Right, a Powerful Compliance Tool
Carol Weidner, eZCom Software

Enhanced compliance brings opportunity. Vendors who excel in this area enjoy clear advantages, such as avoiding chargebacks that may add up to hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars per year, as well as improved relationships with retail partners. A strong compliance record with retail partners can result in the following competitive gains: larger and more frequent orders, fast tracking at the distribution center, an accelerated and efficient sales cycle, better cash flow through faster payment of invoices, bargaining power, improved reputation, and increased business.

It All Adds Up: Analytics, Assortment Data Bolster Business
Peter Zaballos, SPS Commerce

Without a doubt, the holidays can - and will - provide a critical stress test and opportunity for today's leading retailers and suppliers to capture the hearts and wallets of consumers. Websites must stay up-to-date with the latest product details. Shipping needs to sail smoothly. And retailers' shelves, both in-store and online, need to stay stocked.

Do Fill Rate Requirements Really Reduce Out-of-Stocks?

Expectations are higher than ever for retailers to eliminate out-of-stocks. With the added complexity of omni-channel comes the idea of the "endless aisle." Consumers are no longer tolerant of empty store shelves, "out-of-stock" messages on e-commerce sites, or backorder promises, regardless of channel. Consumers want what they want, when they want it, how they want it.
